When you move to the Netherlands with the intention to settle, you should register in person at the City Hall department burgerzaken of your town of residence. You will be registered in the GBA (city’s administrative records) To enable this registration you must bring with you the following information:
  • copy of passport
  • original birth certificate
  • original marriage certificate (if appropriate)
  • original divorce certificate (if appropriate)
  • copy of home rental or purchase agreement
After a few weeks you will be officially registered in the GBA and if needed, you may pick up an abstract at the city hall.An abstract from the GBA (city’s administrative records) is a declaration provided by city hall.  An abstract contains details of your registration in the city’s administrative records.Various organizations such as housing agencies, embassies, and pension funds may request you for an abstract. The abstract shows the official details that are recorded for you in your place of residence.`

Note:
As of 27 September 2007 the Sofi-number has been replaced by the BSN number (Citizen Service Number). You receive the BSN number when you register at city hall.
